The port of Villa San Giovanni (category II, class II) represents the main maritime connection node between Calabria and Sicily, allowing the docking of ferries operating in the Strait of Messina for the transport of people, wheeled vehicles (commercial and not) and railway trains. It has an entrance with a width of 230 m, a subsequent evolution basin with a diameter of 40 m, a body of water of 67,000 sq.m, with variable depths between 5 and 10 m and operational docks for a total of 1,228 m.

The port structure is closely connected to the railway one, so that you can directly access the train station from the sockets.

The ferry service is carried out by a navigation division of the I.R.N. (Italian Railway Network) and a private company.

The first uses 4 sockets; 3 of these, equipped with platforms for boarding railway trains (passengers or goods), are reserved for the docking of one-way ferries, used for the transport of railway vehicles and cars; the other dock is equipped for the loading/unloading of heavy wheeled vehicles on bidirectional ferries.

The SEZ port area is made up of the "state-owned maritime areas, the quays, the other port works and the opposite water bodies between the mouth of the Solaro stream to the south and the existing protective pier for the landing places of the tourist port that remains excluded from the territorial district as extended to the north "(Ministerial Decree 6 August 2013). Stretchs of water are excluded for the purposes of the SEZ. The area size included in the perimeter of the SEZ area corresponds to about 4 ha.

The SEZ Calabria strategic plan, chap. 9 “Facilitations and incentives”, (P.M.D. 12/2018 art. 6, l. g, c. 1) identifies the following main facilities to support the SEZ:

  • Law 181/89 (D.G.R. 423/2016, D.G.R. 95/2018)
  • Craft Fund (D.G.R. 580/2017)

Furthermore, the law n. 178/2020 (Budget Law 2021), art. 1, c. 173-176, introduced a further facility for businesses that set up new economic initiatives in SEZ areas, regarding the reduction by 50% in income taxes for activities carried out in the SEZ.

Environmentally protective restrictions: The entire SEZ development area is subject to the "Coastal Territories" restriction. (Ref. Art. 142 of Legislative Decree no. 42/2014).
Part of the SEZ development area, located to the north, is subject to environmental -Buildings and Areas of Public Interest restriction D.M. 180069 “Coastal Panoramic Area of ​​Villa San Giovanni (RC)”.

Environmental restriction: For about half of its extension, the SEZ development area is subject to the Nature 2000 Network Environmental Restriction IT9350300 "Costa Viola".
On the seabed of the waters overlooking the entire port area, there is the Nature 2000 Network Environmental Restriction ZSC IT9350172 "Seabed from Punta Pezzo to Capo Armi".

Coastal Erosion Plan: The SEZ development area located in the center of the port area, has affected by different risks (high, medium and low) of the PSEC.

Flood Area Management Plan: Compared to the PGRA, coordinated at the hydrographic district level, there are three bands of areas affected by floods, identified according to the national specifications.
