The port of Reggio Calabria is included in the global network (TEN-T Comprehensive). It spreads over 236,000 sm, with depths varying between 4 and 13 m and operational docks for a total of 1,848 m, behind which there are 75,400 sm of service area.
As Villa San Giovanni Port, it constitutes an important maritime hub for connections with Sicily, guaranteeing scheduled services with Messina and the Aeolian Islands.
Along the Reggio Calabria - Messina route, passenger traffic is essentially carried out by fast vehicles, while the transport of commercial wheeled vehicles is guaranteed by ferries of private companies. The connections with the Aeolian Islands, intended for passenger traffic only, are carried out by private hydrofoil lines.
The port of Reggio Calabria has also a pleasure boating function; in the port area there is a tourist dock reserved for pleasure craft, with 50 berths.
In regard to freight traffic, in the past the port was functionally connected to numerous Mediterranean ports such as, in particular, Casablanca (Morocco), Marseille (France), Izmir, Sousse, Unye, Antalya, Iskederun, Ertegli, Nemrut (Turkey ), Ceuta (Spain), Patras (Greece), Zaporozhya (Ukraine), Valletta (Malta).
The port area has direct links to the road and motorway network (direct junction with the A2).
The area between the pleasure dock and the southern gate, near via Florio, along the Levante quay; the rear port area close to the Ponente pier and the area near the motorway ramp have been considered for the purpose of the SEZ
The area size included in the perimeter of the SEZ area corresponds to about 10 ha.
